The first phase of an exciting new building project at Speenhamland School has provided a modern learning environment and extra indoor and outdoor space, from which all pupils will benefit.

The Pelican Building has been transformed into an inspiring learning environment for Early Years children. The £250k project was funded by West Berkshire Council and has provided two new classrooms, a designated outdoor learning zone, plus accessible toilets and hoists for children with physical disabilities.

Now the new space is complete, the Council will be able to expand the Keevill Unit, an existing teaching space for children with physical difficulties.

Dominic Boeck, West Berkshire’s Executive Member for Children, Young people and Education said, “We are delighted with the transformation at the school. Now the Pelican Building is up and running, the children can have their lessons there while we refurbish the Keevill Unit.  Once that work is completed, there will be ample room for all children to learn and access whatever equipment they need.”

Julie Lewry, Headteacher at Speenhamland School said, “The Pelican Building is a fabulous learning environment for our Early Years children. We’re excited that work can now start on phase two the redevelopment of our Keevill Unit to increase the space we desperately need to ensure the children in our physically disabled resource have the very best learning environment.”
